YSTAD THE HOMETOWN OF WALLANDER`
Rent a holiday home in Ystad and discover the hometown of the inspector Kurt Wallander.
Ystad has a picturesque city center with many half-timbered houses, a monastery and a historic town hall. The narrow cobbled streets are framed by colorful town-houses, behind which hidden courtyards open up. In this idyllic backdrop unfolds the gloomy crime novel about Kurt Wallander by Henning Mankell. All the places, streets and restaurants mentioned in the books exist in reality, such as the Wallander house in the Mariagatan 10 and his favorite café "Fridolfs Konditori".
With over 40 million books sold worldwide, Henning Mankell is one of the most widely read writers in Sweden. His books have been translated into more than 40 languages. Twenty-six years ago the first book about inspector Kurt Wallander was published, and then another 10 books.
The books were filmed and the recordings are made in Ystad Studio, on the streets, squares and the countryside around Ystad. The films have been launched in 20 countries and have an estimated audience of nearly 130 million. The BBC has made four television series where Kenneth Branagh stars as inspector Wallander.
Join a guided tour in the footsteps of Wallander, where you can try to solve some of Wallander's cases. The guided tours pass many places in Ystads that the attentive Mankell readers recognize, but also filming locations familiar from the films. During the summer months, the city's volunteer fire brigade also organizes Wallander-tours with an old nostalgic fire engine from 1930! You can also walk on your own in the footsteps of Wallander. With a free Wallander app, you can quickly access all information about the film locations and places from the books on your smartphone.
In the film museum, Cineteket, Wallander fans get closer to the inspector. Here a unique collection of scenes, dresses and props of the Swedish and British film productions can be admired. Next to the film museum is Ystad Studios where the films were recorded.
Ystad has a fascinating history, interesting museums and art galleries, 40 km of sandy beaches and the fantastic landscape of the province of Skåne right outside the door. Some coastal cities have simply everything to offer.
